Designing with Watermedia & Collage
Indoor/All levels
Explores the practical use and implementation of design principles utilizing watermedia and collage in order to emphasize learning the all-important design crucial for award-winning art.

Jerry has said that design is the fundamental plan for a painting, just
as a sonata is the plan for music, design is the organizational
part of art, the foundation of a building. When we have achieved
success in technique, drawing, and design, then we can and will
be able to paint with feeling.
This is an indoor studio course designed to take you in new directions, using either acrylics or watercolors, combined with collage & stained oriental paper - in non-objective formats as well as abstraction and representational subjects. These design principles apply to all forms of art. Emphasis will be on working with the elements and principles of design to create strong, unique imagery that is truly personal including the equally important emotional content.
Learn to respond to surfaces, develop ways to abstract imagery or design non-objective subjects with a variety of design formats while enjoying the process of exploring new and exciting means of expression.
Daily demos, lectures and critiques. Students may also bring work from home for critique and reference material for workshop painting. Students welcome to bring any media.
You'll enjoy Gerry's sincerity, generosity, genial personality and masterful ability to guide and inspire artists at all levels of experience.

Artist Bio- Gerald Brommer NWS, AWS, WCWS, RMNWS, watercolor and acrylic painter, collagist, teacher, author and juror - is in great demand. Artist Bio~
Peggi Kroll Roberts Award winning artist, Peggi Kroll-Roberts, was trained at Arizona State University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Peggi worked as a fashion and advertising illustrator before making the transition into fine art. Using intense color and value to accentuate her subject, she moved into fine art with a bold palette, a love for small paintings and a very loose style that achieves a lot with a few very energetic brush strokes. She prefers to suggest reality than render it.
Inspired by her children she paints beach scenes and other aspects of their lives. She also breaks away from the conventional still life by painting scenes of cosmetics and the occasional coffee cup or slab of butter. Peggi's work gives us a new appreciation of our own daily life.
Model fee included in tuition.

Nicholas Simmons Bio
Nicholas Simmons was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and began painting in Sarasota, Florida. He studied under many well-known watercolorists, most notably Valfred Thëlin and Barbara Nechis. At the same time, Mr. Simmons pursued a music career as a professional guitarist. He did not return to visual art until 2004, when he began painting watercolor again and launched his website.
Mr. Simmons' paintings have been featured in a variety of publications such as L' Art de l' Aquarelle, Watercolor Artist, Watercolor, and a number of books. He has been featured on Maryland Public Television, and in 2008 his acclaimed DVD Innovative Watermedia was released by Creative Catalyst Productions. His work has graced the covers of classical music recordings, including those of world renowned guitar virtuoso, Manuel Barrueco. He is sponsored by Da Vinci Paint, and Escoda Artist Brushes. His Signature Series of Escoda brushes were introduced in 2012.
Awards include top prize at the 2007 National Watercolor Society for his painting Fresh Sushi, consecutive gold medals at the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, 2008-2009, and the gold medal at the Texas Watercolor Society in 2010. In 2012 he was the first recipient of the National Watercolor Society's special Masters Award.
A 14-page feature in the Winter 2009 issue of Watercolor magazine included this summary of the artist's work, written by John Parks:
Nicholas Simmons paints in watermedia on a scale that rivals oil painting. The subject matter is a dazzling mix of figures juxtaposed with printed lettering, graffiti, Japanese block prints, neon lights, reflections, and lavish corners of nature. The effect can be disorienting, as though a camera has taken a picture by accident, revealing an image that is both exciting and mysterious. The paint itself swirls, floods, drips, and spatters, driven on by the general excitement of the imagery and giving the work a sense that it was done in a rush in a matter of minutes.
Mr. Simmons exhibits internationally as a solo artist and with major watermedia stars in group and invitational exhibitions, as well as one of six members of North American Watercolor Artists (NAWA), representing the United States. He was the sole judge representing the United States at the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial, the world's largest watercolor exhibition, in 2010 and 2012. He has judged numerous other major exhibitions.
His work is held in public and private collection in the United States, Europe, and China.
Nicholas Simmons' work has earned him a worldwide reputation as one of the most exciting artists in contemporary watercolor. His gift for inspiring others makes him sought after as a workshop instructor and lecturer, known for his fresh, unorthodox, and often irreverent approach. The artist lives with his wife and daughter in the Washington, D.C. area.

Find your Authentic Creative Voice & Shake-ip the Status Quo
In-Studio/ All levels
There are 2 large decisions necessary when launching into a new painting; one is what to paint, the other is how to paint it. One day everyone will bring a favorite subject, figure, landscape, still-life, or abstraction. This can be from a photo, drawing, sketch or imagination. The week will be give to exploring the numerous ways one might use expressively and creatively to produce work that is most appropriate and personal for each student. Through demos, lectures, and critiques- private and group- students will progress to finding their truest voice in painting.
Without a clear declaration of what one wants to say in one's painting, it can become just an imitation of someone else's work. In this workshop Skip will challenge painters to shake up their status quo. With insight, warmth and humor, Skip brings out the best in each painter.
The class begins weeks before the first class meeting. In class, I will ask each student to explore the subject compositionally, emotionally, intellectually, technically, and honestly. It is my belief that the only way anyone can CREATE is to explore and that is what we will do for our time together. There are no limits on your imagination and thus on your techniques and materials. Bring an open-mind and generous amount of sense of humor.

Watercolor From Within: techniques for painting the essence of nature
Barbara Nechis (Advanced Beginner – Advanced)
This workshop is for all who want to gain a deeper understanding of the creative process of painting, are willing to be flexible, take risks, have fun, be intuitive and inventive. We will not be using rules and formulas however the emphasis will still be on concept, color and design. My inspiration comes both from nature and the inevitable unpredictability of the watercolor medium. Both abstract and realistic forms will be addressed.
I present and demonstrate a different method or idea each day using several techniques to show how to construct original paintings from both source material and the imagination.
Topics include controlling paint on wet paper, under-painting, layering and adding gouache. Critiques will approach problem solving upon the premise that there is always a solution that can turn an unsuccessful painting into a successful one.

In- Studio/All media (non-vaporized media) Workshop
All levels
Katherine teaches one of the most sought after OPEN STUDIO workshops in this country. Almost all of her workshops have a long wait list.
We are very happy to have Katherine joining us.
Bring what you usually use in your own studio. Bring also the source material you need for your work. This is a workshop aiming to sort and focus your efforts, as she works with each artist individually, providing an in-depth review, and discussing with each artist options to make his/her artistic efforts more personal, and more in keeping with the artist's strengths.
Her students call her "The Art Whisperer", because Katherine gets each artist's ideas quickly and guides each artist's development of those ideas with insight and encouragement.
Many of her students consider her a mentor, they return often to receive her guidance and to continue that relationship.
This workshop is helpful for artists who have come to the point where they need a thorough evaluation of their recent work; artists who seek some clarity about his/her artistic strength and focus.
Katherine also brings her many Powerpoint programs to feature various topics and developments in contemporary art. Her belief is that as artists it is important for us to understand and have a grasp of what is being done and shown today.
So this is the two prong approach to Katherine's teaching: To learn to understand what we see, and to develop insight to who we are as artists.

Katherine Chang Liu Bio: Katherine received a full scholarship to UC Berkeley, where she received her MS in science. Her work has won 49 awards in the 80’s, and has been featured in 36 books and 91 magazine or newspaper articles since then. Member of NWS since 1979 and has served as a sole juror and co-juror for 86 national, regional, state level and local competitions. She is represented by six galleries, two of them in the US.
